I'd decide whether that exact copy needs to be the playing copy. Appropriate sleeves and careful handling help, but regular play still involves handling. If a suitable less-pristine or alternate legal printing works, you might keep the sentimental copy protected. Ask a knowledgeable player about valid alternatives.
