Selling for More Isn't Always Profit

@CharizardOnABudget asks

bought for $40 and sold for $50 so I made ten bucks... except after everything I feel like I made lunch money. What do you count?

Jeff answers

I count what actually went out and what actually came back: purchase costs, selling fees, postage, supplies, and any grading expenses. I use our app for the card's market reference, but I keep those transaction costs separately. The difference between two sticker prices can look better than the result. Knowing what you kept helps you decide whether doing it again is worth your time.
