big box of loose cards arrived. Do I sort the whole thing first or protect the good ones as I go?

I'd prepare a clean workspace and sleeves before opening the box. Set aside anything that needs protection as you encounter it, then sort manageable batches. Don't build unstable piles while hunting for the exciting cards. A slower first pass can prevent creating damage during the rescue.
