I corrected a bunch of entries and my estimated total dropped. Did I somehow make the collection worse?

No; you made the record more accurate. In our app, matching the actual cards and the relevant pricing references matters more than preserving a flattering total. @SpreadsheetSnorlax asked what that number really means. A corrected estimate is more useful for decisions than an impressive one built on mismatches.
