I've collected forever but never played. is it embarassing to ask someone to teach me from zero?

Not at all. I'd ask for a beginner session with a ready-to-play deck and someone willing to explain the turns. Collecting knowledge and playing knowledge are different skills. You can recognize rare artwork and still need help understanding a basic action. Everybody starts that part somewhere.
