Raw Sounds Worse Than It Is

@SealOrNoSeal asks

seller says the card is raw. Does that mean it was never sleeved or is damaged?

Jeff answers

“Raw” generally just means ungraded. A raw card could be beautifully preserved or heavily worn; the word doesn't settle its condition. I still want clear photos and an accurate description. Sleeves and rigid holders protect cards, but they don't turn them into professionally graded copies. It's one of those hobby words that sounds more complicated than the idea behind it.
