what are NM and LP? everybody uses these abbreviations like we got a handbook at birth

NM means near mint, LP lightly played, MP moderately played, and HP heavily played; you'll also see damaged. They're shorthand for condition on marketplaces such as TCGplayer, not professional numeric grades. Other marketplaces use different labels. I look at the actual wear and the seller's photos before trusting the abbreviation. Near mint also doesn't mean a guaranteed PSA 10. You're allowed to ask someone to spell it out.
